Huntington University is kicking off the festive season by providing a community gift of its own, in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sudbury.
As part of the university’s annual lighting of its 45-foot tall Christmas tree – the tallest lit Christmas tree in Northern Ontario – Huntington University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kevin McCormick, announced a generous $2,500 donation in support of programs offered through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sudbury, which include one-to-one volunteer and group mentoring, as well as Caring Couple/Caring family programs.
“Every year, in celebration of our university’s annual lighting of its 45-foot tall Christmas tree we make a donation and raise awareness about a worthwhile community initiative,” said Dr. McCormick. “Big Brothers Big Sisters provide at risk children and youth, with positive mentorship experiences. This year, the organization is aiming to recruit 100 volunteers to be trained and matched with youth in our community. I encourage anyone who has ever considered it, to explore the volunteering opportunities available through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sudbury.”
“Mentoring is about prevention, and steering at risk children and youth away from behaviors and situations that ultimately affect their academic, social and economic well-being. Mentoring is also about building resilience and giving them the strength to overcome the obstacles that so often steer them in the wrong direction,” said Chantal Galdu, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sudbury. “We are grateful to Huntington University for this generous community gift, and for helping us to raise awareness of our 2020 goal to match many more of the children and youth we serve with amazing individuals, couples and families from our community.”
This year alone, Big Brothers Big Sisters impacted over 40,000 youth in over 1,100 communities across Canada.
