Huntington University is kicking off the festive season by providing a community gift of its own, in support Sudbury and Area Victim Services (SAVS).
As part of the university’s annual lighting of its 45-foot tall Christmas tree – the tallest lit Christmas tree in Northern Ontario – Huntington University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kevin McCormick, announced a generous $2,500 donation to SAVS. The money will be used to support the organization which offers 24 hour, 7 day a week, community based services, which provide immediate short-term crisis intervention and assistance to persons affected by crime, tragedy and disaster.
“At this time of year when joy and celebration are the main themes it’s easy to forget that not everyone is sharing in the same experience,” said Dr. McCormick. “The team of professionals and volunteer crisis responders at SAVS offer a crucial service that provides emotional support and practical assistance to families and individuals in times of crisis, no matter the season.”
“As we mark the start of the holiday season, we are extremely grateful to Huntington University and their efforts to give back to the community through this generous donation to SAVS,” stated Marc Guerin, President of the SAVS Board of Directors. “Donations such as these, allow our organization to continue to offer free and confidential assistance to victims of crime and sudden tragedy while ensuring they receive intervention, support and assistance.”
“Victim Services is unique in that we are the only agency in Sudbury that provides immediate on-site crisis, trauma, safety and support services. The immediacy of this service allows us to aid in mitigating the harmful effects of trauma,” said Erica Gertz, Executive Director, SAVS. “As a non-profit organization, we rely on the support of donors to ensure that SAVS can effectively meet the needs of victims and that they are well supported throughout their long-term journey as survivors . Thank you very much to Huntington University for investing in our mission and helping to raise awareness about our organization.”
