For more than three decades, Dan Xilon has been a tireless advocate for the people of Greater Sudbury, dedicating his life to ensuring that no one in the community goes without support.
As Executive Director of the Banque d’aliments Sudbury Food Bank (BDSFB) for over 20 years, Dan has transformed the organization into a lifeline for thousands of families. Under his leadership, the Food Bank and its 39 member agencies now respond to more than 16,000 requests for service every month, ensuring that every donated dollar translates directly into food on a neighbour’s table.
Dan began his career in the private sector, building valuable skills in business management and marketing. Yet, despite his professional success, he felt a calling to serve others. In 1991, he left the corporate world behind and entered the not-for-profit sector, where his passion for helping those in need became his life’s work. Starting as a volunteer, he quickly realized that his business acumen could be repurposed to build sustainable systems of care. His innovative approach—treating the Food Bank as both a community service and a well-run enterprise—allowed him to form alliances with food distributors, farmers, and businesses, creating greater purchasing power and more consistent donations.
Beyond his work with the Food Bank, Dan has served on numerous boards and committees dedicated to health, education, and social services across Northern Ontario. He has been recognized with some of the country’s most prestigious honours, including the King Charles III Coronation Medal, the Ontario Premier’s Award, the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary, and Feed Ontario’s Provincial Achievement Award. Each award reflects not only his leadership, but also his compassion and unwavering belief in the power of community.
At the heart of Dan’s journey is a simple philosophy: people come first. Whether helping pensioners, students, or working families, he has always placed the needs of others above his own. His dedication, humility, and vision have made him not only a community leader, but also an inspiration to all who believe in building a more caring and resilient society.
