For the third consecutive year, the Huntington University Gerontology Society (HUGS) will collect gifts for local older adults throughout the holiday season.
All gifts collected as part of Huntington University’s annual Christmas Giving Tree campaign are presented to long-term care residents at Finlandia Village, Pioneer Manor and Extendicare York, on Christmas Day. Since 2015, this student-led initiative has ensured that more than 125 gifts have been distributed to local seniors in care homes.
“In our third year, the Christmas Giving Tree has already become a fond tradition at Huntington University. Our university community eagerly looks forward to carefully selecting, purchasing, and wrapping gifts in support of this initiative,” said Bethany Robinson, HUGS President. “Many older adults are at risk of social isolation, especially during times of celebration, such as Christmas. The Giving Tree campaign shares the spirit of the festive season with long-term care residents in our community.”
“This campaign is a prime example of how lessons move beyond the classroom to have a greater impact in the community at large, and I commend the students from HUGS for their ongoing commitment to this community project,” said Dr. Kevin McCormick, President and Vice-Chancellor of Huntington University. “I encourage all students, staff, faculty and Sudburians to support this cause and help ensure this holiday season is a happy one for our aged population.”
Members of the public wishing to participate in this initiative can contact Bethany Robinson at 519-381-0456.
